Barbara Grüning

University of Milan-Bicocca

Barbara Grüning is associate Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication at the Institute of Sociology and Social Research of the University Milan Bicocca. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology in 2009. She is a member of the ICLA Research Committee on Comics Studies and Graphic Narrative since its foundation in 2015. She is interested in how social phenomena and processes are represented in comics and other media, focusing especially on discourses and narratives of mental diseases, (gendered) bodies, collective pasts, urban spaces, and cultural identities. She is currently working on two projects: 1. the genesis and development of the Italian field of comics production; 2. the co-construction by comics of the Italian subculture of ‘Paninari’ in the 1980s.  She frequently uses comics in her teaching courses to communicate social and cultural research methods and theories.
